GNR and NPR, together?

Guns ‘n Roses‘ long awaited new album Chinese Democracy has finally been released, now let’s watch the campaign to sell the album to their former fans (35+ at least, soccer moms, etc.). The business has changed, the audience doesn’t listen to rock radio the same way, so it will be interesting how they reach the fans.

Our friends at NPR seem skeptical (At Long Last, “Chinese Democracy” Exists), and why not?  Anything that takes so long to make that isn’t a pyramid probably isn’t happening.  Harsh fan reviews on that page too.  Not looking good, eesh.

It takes a soft drink

To mount such a big relaunch, it might pay to hook yourself on to a paper towel or something going to most every store in the country. Dr. Pepper‘s reward for the release of the album in 08 is subtle, but a campaign nonetheless (in my opinion). My guess is an exclusive release from Wal-Mart or Starbuck’s like AC/DC or Paul McCartney had wasn’t available due to the delays and accordant skepticism.

The reward from Dr. Pepper of “One Million Dollars” (Dr. Evil voice) is not much to Axl. If the album doesn’t come out in time for the reward, they end up mocking him. Also, a million isn’t enough to move Axl, but it is enough to help launch an album. Plus all the ads and placement at retail. Why else would GnR/Axl, a mad control freak/perfectionist, take the bet? When did the Dr. Pepper contest start? My guess is after a meeting w/the band and label.

Axl – the big interview

Has Axl commented on that or done any significant interviews for this album yet? Will it be a Rolling Stone cover? Katie Couric would be a good choice in my book, and that’s because she has the older audience and she’s on a roll w/the weirdos. The NY Times’ Jon Pareles wrote an artful skewering of the album, complete with a time line of “world events” vs. Axl’s (continued after graphic):

Reconstituted Tour

If he/they go on tour this year, I hope Axl won’t keep the people waiting. The domino effect this could have on their fans in this economy could be devastating. Think of the babysittting overtime claims alone!

TV Advertising

There must have been an ad or some presence during the American Music Awards, no? I expect to see ads during major sporting events (especially w/traditional advertisers like automakers cutting back their budgets) and 60 Minutes, etc.

Social Media

I’d be curious to see what’s cooking. Write to me if you see anything interesting!
