WCBN, Ann Arbor's logo

WCBN, based at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, is one of the most interesting and exemplary low-wattage college radio stations I know of. The concentration of population makes them influential, as the campus is massive (90,000 at their football games!).

The high quality of people at the station has created a great programming legacy (reggae with Brian Tomsic, hip hop with Chill Will and Chad Wiliams‘ americana are just a few programs on air for over a decade) and numerous influential graduates such as Andy Flynn, Gretchen Lindensmith, Brendan M. Gillen, Tom Simonien, Carlos Julio Souffront and many more.

I am very proud to have a WCBN fleece in my collection from way back.

Here is their current list, verbatim of course:

What’s the deal It’s DJ Chill Will of the University of Michigan’s
WCBN 88.3 FM. Home of the longest running college radio Hip Hop show
in the Mid-West and maybe the country. Check out our top 30 chart for
January 14 and be sure to tune into the show weekly on 88.3 Fm in the
Ann Arbor/Metro Detroit area. Or at www.wcbn.org Saturday nights from
9 to 12 midnight est.

Well it’s a new year and still cold as hell with snow all over the
place. So I had to dip and make my way to Cali for a week. 80’s baby
and I’m loving it. Look for interviews with a lot of dope artist and a
special interview with a Hip Hop heavyweight. Big shout to DJ Big Lou
The Mayor on the birth of his daughter.
