KUCI Irvine's web logo

KUCI at the University of California in Irvine has been a friend of mine since the 80s, when their legendary music director Hilaire Brosio helped bring them to national prominence, as one of the 35 “Gavin Alternative Reporters.” Since then, he and several folks from there have gone on to careers in the business (Chris Carey, Todd Sievers, Hillary Schmidt and probably a few more too).

One of my favorite things about the station is really about the UCI campus: many scenes in Conquest for the Planet of the Apes were filmed at the school, which had a “futuristic” look at the time.   Maybe not so much now, but as you can see below, there is a lot of vitality to the radio station, even without including their current playlist. Shout out to my friend Big Jim, who does a great reggae show on Wednesday mornings.

Please check out KUCI’s Newsletter, and the links therein. They have a great station site at KUCI.org, loaded with info and music.

Hello friends,

You might have noticed something a little odd about this edition of
the newsletter, namely the addition of LL Cool J in the subject line.
Rest easy: this isn’t a drastic shift in KUCI’s music policy. Mr. Cool
J’s quite famous (from what I’m told), and he certainly doesn’t need
our help spinning his music. No, that attention is still firmly placed
with the best artists and genres rarely heard anywhere else.

That being said, want to go see LL Cool J? He’s performing at Club
Nokia this Friday, and we’d love to send you and a guest to see him.

Also, the Rockstar Taste of Chaos Tour kicks off this Saturday at the
Hollywood Palladium, featuring Thursday, Four Year Strong, Bring Me
the Horizon, Pierce the Veil, and Cancer Bats. You guessed it – we’re
giving away tickets to that as well; consider it a last minute V-Day
present from us. Enter to win here:

… there’s more, but you’ll have to wait until next week. Why spoil
the surprise?

On to the news!

Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 – Goodnight Oslo (Yep Roc)
This is one of those dudes who any self-respecting music dude should
be totally knowledgeable about (I am not). He is a singer-songwriter
who buddies up with some REMites on this release. Classy story-songs
with all the hooky sorta dark almost-power-pop you might expect.
