“… are all going to meet down at the Cadillac Ranch!”

Bruce Springsteen sang about it in 1980, a few years after it was made famous in Smokey and the Bandit.  The NY Times printed the picture above in a fascinating yet heartbreaking blog response to GM shuttering the Pontiac brand among others.

“They are not Just Cars” is a fascinating article featuring four branding/car experts commenting on Detroit’s problems and GM’s impending cutbacks.  I happen to know one of the commentators, former Warner Brothers Records publicist Bob Merlis, and the fact that he is a car collector shows how fat the music business used to be.   He’s a pretty snotty guy (except when someone powerful is around) but on the topic of cars, I’m sure he lives up to his own hype.  And he doesn’t spare GM for a second in his commentary.

The article also features a great picture of an old GTO that reminds me of the one legendary dj and club promoter Rodney Binghenheimer drives.  So there are your music connections to this sad article.
