Christmas at the Corner 09

VIP for Christmas at the Corner

If you are ever anywhere near Dallas, Waco or Austin, I recommend you make a visit to Willie’s Place, an alternative energy (biodiesel), entertainment and dining complex owned by the one and only Willie Nelson. Last Tuesday, I attended the annual holiday event, and Christmas at the Corner was a night I’ll never forget.

After a fantastic show the night before at the Austin Music Hall that featured Asleep at the Wheel, we made our way up I-35 to Carl’s Corner, first rolling through Willie’s hometown of Abbott Texas and stopping in West for some Czech pastries.

Willie’s Place is a massive place that includes a saloon, cafe, restaurant, honky tonk and gift shop. with a lineup including Willie Nelson and Family, Ray Price, Paula Nelson, Folk Uke, Billy Joe Shaver, The Boxmasters and a gospel group I am spacing on, it was an incredible night of music.

The entire concert was broadcast in sparkling fidelity on the Sirius XM channel Willie’s Place, and if you were in doubt of the vertical integration of this impressive physical plant, there was plenty of food and clothing as well. We were treated to a tour of the massive amount of photos by none other than Paul English, chowed on fine fare at the Blue Skies Cafe and even snuck into two secret areas (the poker room and the indoor bus shed). There’s an ample selection of Willie swag in the store alongside usual truck stop items like accessories (an iPhone adapter!) and snacks.
