Rock legends AC/DC will be the sole music contributor to Iron Man 2, it was announced today by Marvel Comics. As the classic rock band extends its long career with yet another innovative marketing move, we can only stand back and salute. Their previous recording “Black Ice” was available exclusively through Wal-Mart, a shrewd move for a classic rock artist with their name recognition. AC/DC’s strong association with Iron Man 2 takes it a step further. It’s an exciting association between music, specifically classic rock, and a massive entertainment franchise.

While it’s unclear how much AC/DC will be in the film, which will be released in early May, Columbia Records will release a compilation spanning their career in April with the coy title “AC/DC: Iron Man 2.” Being embedded in Iron Man 2 puts AC/DC in theaters, cds, dvds, downloads, and even more sections within Wal-Mart. As you can see in the video, the promotional exposure for AC/DC is enormous, and it’s for an age-old song. In some ways, by including songs from 2008’s Black Ice, Iron Man 2 continues its marketing campaign!

Marvel Comics COO Tim Connors: “Music is an integral part of the Tony Stark and Iron Man experience, and we are pleased that Columbia and AC/DC are taking part in the franchise’s phenomenon. Through this relationship, the band is delivering fans supercharged Iron Man-branded music through all our combined consumer touch points, from the movie to retail outlets and even virally with the debut of the new video.”

It’s not the hippest spiel we’ve ever heard, but it doesn’t need to be.

Iron Man was one of the best super hero movies to date, and I’m so excited that I haven’t even watched the trailer prior to posting it here. This is the entertainment event of 2010, and it’s good to see Marvel launching the project with music marketing. I expect to see a state of the art commercial for Iron Man during the Super Bowl, and considering the demographics, it should include a hefty dose of Red Sonia (Scarlett Johansen).

Marvel Comics has had a rocky road leading up to its triumphant and hugely profitable sale to Disney this year. They have done an amazing job in the past ten years with their films to put the characters back on the cultural map, and the company in the black. This is a great collaboration and that it has such a prominent position on the Iron Man marketing timeline is even more impressive.
