KUOM, also known as Radio K, is one of the best college radio stations, and their weekly play list shows why.  With a stream of great artists coming through, a diverse programming policy and a great ability to promote themselves, KUOM, has grown from an am campus only station to taking over fm signals and being huge on the net too.

Radio K is another example of a great college radio station at a public university.  Keep funding them Minnesota!

Heyooooo,

First and foremost, Happy New Year!

Tonight is the big Animal Collective record release party we’re sponsoring at the Electric Fetus record store. It should be pretty sweet!

We counted down our Top 77 albums of the year on New Years Day, and I’ll be sending out that list soon (I know you’re on the edge of your seat…). We also did a recap of some of our best instudios from the year , and we celebrated our annual Local Music Day on Friday with ALL local music and instudios from local bands Sharp Teeth, The Deaths and Private Dancer. ‘Twas a blast.

Now, on to the new stuff: We started adding records again this week, and my tracking hours will be changing. Starting the week of January 12, you can harass me via phone Tuesday 3:30-6 PM and Friday 8:30-10 AM, both CST. Feel free to harass me anytime via email, as usual. Jake will still be taking care of Hip Hop and much of the local stuff we get, and I’ll still be doing Top 200, RPM and Loud Rock. Bam!

Radio K will soon have a new, stronger FM signal! Now not only will we be broadcasting on 770 AM, 106.5 FM and 100.7 FM (and radiok.org), but we’ll have 104.5 FM. Hooray!

SXSW awesomeness – I’ve talked to most of you about this. It’s going to be rad, and thanks to everyone who has helped make it happen so far!

New on our blog: The Dap Kings’ guest DJ set is up, as well as an interview with Raekwon from Wu-Tang. You can also listen to guest DJ sets from Eagles of Death Metal and Deerhunter and watch video of School of Seven Bells.

Radio K’s “Live from Radio K” compilation:

The sixth installment of our live compilation. It’s called “Live from Radio K” and is full of instudio gems from the likes of Land of Talk, Daniel Johnston, The Fiery Furnaces, Dosh, A Place to Bury Strangers, Doomtree, Nomo, Tegan and Sara among many others.

Weekly Release Spotlight: Los Campesinos! – We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed (Arts & Crafts)
“The guy singing all the sad songs died / Oh well, I guess he was right,” sings Gareth Campesinos with world-weary gusto on the opening track of his band’s second full-length We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. The line, along with the album’s title, encompasses everything that one needs to know about Los Campesinos! They’re insufferably cute and clever, yes, but they’re also bursting at the seams with desperation and bleakness, which may seem especially odd considering their candy-sweet pop melody savvy. Really though, it all fits majestically together, seven Welsh twentysomethings baring their gnashing yellow teeth of glorious youth while they fight against the impending end of days. [Read more]
