As Bob Marley said, “when one door is closed, another is open.” When you watch the video of Chris Blackwell explaining the pitfalls of today’s blockbuster-oriented business to developing artists, you wonder how he might have launched some of his artists today.

The Hector Fund attempts to be an alternative to both the major label route and a diy approach, with a public appeal to raise funds for their projects to record, promote themselves and tour. Ironically, their first artist was a foundation part of Island in the late 60s, Linda Thompson. There are several other artists, including the Ecuadorian singer Alex Alvear, and the Bodega Girls.

David Ginsburg, a former WBOS programmer is one of The Hector Fund’s founders. Ginsburg on the company’s creed: “we believe that the future is bright for all artists who wish to finance their creative endeavors without having to enter into contracts for big recoup-able advances with diminishing returns.”

The Hector Fund “is literally four guys in a basement” according to Ginsburg, but they are starting with at least one very great artist. In fact, Linda Thompson and The Hector Fund are supplying a free track, “Never the Bride,” to get things going on this page.

I guess it’s called The Hector Fund because they hector people for money? The Linda Thompson page has a “pass the hat” $10 contribution level, up to $5000 where she will record your song and let you play on it too. That is crazy!

Anyhow, best of luck to the Hector Fund. Sounds like something Chris Blackwell would do.
