Blue Note Records has just announced a new Norah Jones album, The Fall, will be released on November 17. The first new music, a single called “Chasing Pirates” will be heard on radio stations during the week of October 6 (let’s see if it shows up online somewhere first).

Norah continues to expand her sound, with production handled by Jacquire King, and “new band members” including two drummers, Joey Waronker and James Gadson; keyboardist James Poyser; guitarists Marc Ribot and Smokey Hormel; and touts songwriting collaborations with Ryan Adams, Will Sheff (Okkervil River) and the well-spring of “Come Away with Me,” Jesse Harris.

Sounds like she is going all out to kick it to another level creatively, and specifically focused on listeners her own age. It reminds me of Johnny Gill’s career – he sounded too old with his deep voice and too “mature” content-wise for the taste of his teenage audience.

The talented Ms. Jones is in the opposite mode – she wants her audience to be younger. After building an easy-listening empire to rival Diana Krall’s (or anyone else’s), that won’t be easy to pull off. Someone feels confident/desperate enough to try to do it in the midst of the fourth quarter (when Christmas release marketing is most competitive). This album will get a big push, and hopefully won’t disappoint her base.

Good luck Norah Jones, I look forward to hearing The Fall!
