Way behind on movies, I just recently saw the excellent “Notorious” about the life of the great rap artist Notorious B.I.G. Like its subject, Notorious deserves a place among the best of its genre, especially considering how famous the artist was. It has already been 13 years since Biggie was murdered, long enough for the film to include his son in a well-played role as young Christopher in his teen years, as he got into rhyming and dealing drugs on the streets of Brooklyn.

As Biggie transitions to the adult character, Willie Nelson appears in Notorious:

A critical scene in any rock bio is the moment of the first historic performance, and whether the actor can project the charisma of their subject. Not only does Jamal Woolard rap proficiently and look the part, the rest of the scene and remaining famous collaborators are equally believable. When he returns from the performance, his mother is waiting with a bad letter from high school. Christopher, probably anticipating this moment, has brought his mother a present, “the corniest country music album I could find at Fulton Records.”

According to the movie Notorious, Biggie’s mom is a big country music/Willie Nelson fan! She does seem non-plussed by the album, but considering the letter and the “plate of mashed potatoes” she found under Chris’ bed, you can understand why. I can see Willie’s influence in Notorious B.I.G.’s songwriting, can’t you?
