Hoover's Lakers are in the Playoffs

Fresh off a triumphant weekend of mixing the Stagecoach music festival, our man Chris “Hoover” Rankin is making the most of his role in the LA Lakers‘ current NBA Playoff run. I know nothing about basketball, but that Hoover is the ultimate Lakers fan is one of the facts I hold onto. I’m not sure where he is in “the Snake” of the Staples Center, as he calls the path that wires take from the stage to the speakers (with varying degrees of creative input from mix technicians along the way – hence the Hoover term of “being on the wrong end of the Snake”), but clearly he has made the typically great impression on his co-workers and other fans.

You may remember this post about Hoover’s effort supporting DJ Mbenga that made it to Africa last year.

Anyhow, I’m pleased to share this artifact of Hoover making an impromptu appearance on TNT the other night during the game. Apparently the guys snapped the legend during a mic check and put it on tv as a goofy promo for post game commentary.

Notice Hoov’s classic Hawaiian shirt decorated with a Lakers motif. One of his trademarks is the Hawaiian shirt, and he has a whole rating system for them. Can we see if this one has the wooden buttons he prefers?

Chris “Hoover” Rankin continues to be a charismatic person who knows how to hang backstage and in the house as well. I have learned a lot from this dude (“do your expenses daily so you don’t have to re-create your whole tour” for example). I propose that his feelings as a fan help him relate to bands and mix better. An inveterate scorekeeper at the ballgame with his own scorecard… I wonder Hoov, have you figured out how to do pitch counts for bands yet?

We’ll have to wait until next weekend to see if this series will make it back to LA, and if the NBA is like baseball, the games are spread over several networks.  If that’s the case, it makes this tribute to our buddy a possible end of season send off from his pals in the booth.

I couldn’t care less about basketball, but Hoover gets me interested.  Give him his own show already!  As you can see by the upgrade of Charles Barkley the guys ran shortly after giving the global audience a glimpse of Hoover, his style can make a huge difference.
