Happy 100th birthday to Ronald Reagan. He was MCA’s greatest client, and any study of the 40th president should include his relationship with Lew Wasserman and Ted Schreiber. They set him up with GE Theater and the SAG presidency, which included violence against other Hollywood Unions unwilling to consolidate under SAG. In those days Reagan carried a gun.
As Governor of California, he took a hard line against the protesters at Berkeley, and as President, he was ruthless to the air traffic controllers among many other groups. Reagan was a smoothie, but he was no hero. He sold arms to Iran to fund the Contras and many other corrupt, questionable decisions in office. But then again he might have been senile.
My favorite Reagan moment besides his numerous photo ops with Lew Wasserman was his speech after the Challenger failed. He was a good grandfather to America that night when he said “the future belongs to the brave” and promised more Space Shuttle missions.
