Was it Gypsy Rose Lee that said “Ya Gotta Have a Gimmick”? When I saw the NY Daily News report “Rocker Ryan Star’s music video puts jobless in the spotlight” on Tuesday, it was startling, but not surprising. With unemployment figures going through the roof, you could probably make a whole blog of just songs about the economy. Ryan Star has provided a promo/public service site called www.breatheforjobs.com, combining the title of his single and the “angle,” American joblessness.

For some time now, Ryan Star has been managed by master music marketer Eric Wong, famous for Moby, Bon Jovi, Hoobastank and many others since. Ryan Star’s gimmick got reported in the News, and that was that he put jobless folks in his video for the song “Breathe.” (I wonder if it’s the Greenwheel song that Melissa Etheridge covered and we all worked together).

The young Star was fortunate to be interviewed by my friend Andrea Dresdale for ABC News Radio as well:

Hats off to Eric Wong and Ryan Star for coming up with a timely idea aimed at helping folks while breaking the record!
