As part of his continued Renaissance, Bob Dylan has endorsed a set of new harmonicas made by the longtime industry leader, Hohner.  Somehow, Dylan continues to reap benefits from the new landscape of the music business without being offensive/crass (Stones, Springsteen, take note).  Pete Townshend gets it too (but he had a special way to learn the power of the net, eh?).

The Dylan team is nothing if not web-savvy, there is a great site Hohner created to promote the harps.  There are 7 different ones, for each key, and they come in autographed, boxed, limited editions for $25K each.  There are also “signature” models that retail for $100.  How much higher is that than the regular ones?  About double!  But if you are a fan and want a chance to “be like Bob” for a second, what better way to do it?

On the site, Dylan lists a few of his favorite harmonica songs: “Roller Coaster” by Little Walter;  “Going Down the Road” by Woody Guthrie and “Freight Train Boogie” by the Delmore Bros. featuring Wayne Raney.”

Nice to see our friend Mickey Raphael, the wonderful harmonica player with Willie Nelson and Family (see “Georgia on My Mind,” “On the Road Again,” etc.) mentioned on the page for the Marine Band Deluxe model.  For this reason alone, I recommend The Musician’s Friend.

And if you do buy one, Yogi Berra requests that you practice somewhere on your own, away from people.
